Your Favorite non-Dallas reporter from Dallas but now in Austin

I’ve been getting the following e-mails from a Bob Robuck:

Hey all,
Continue to keep voting for me as Best Reporter in Austin. I was nominated last week…and am in 3rd place and would at least like to hold onto that. You can vote once an hour…and the voting ends tomorrow (Tuesday). So keep ‘em coming in. Just go to the link below and vote for Bob Robuck.
Thanks so much for your continued support!
Bob

First, I was asking who the hell this guy was and how am I on his email list. Turns out we’re both members of the same journalist association. Fair enough. But why would I vote for someone I don’t know in a city I don’t live in. Well, this is why. The dude has Dallas ties. And so that’s enough for me to vote him in as Best Reporter in Austin. He graduated from SMU and has worked his way through practically all the markets in Texas to make it big in Austin. Something that I’m trying to embark on this summer. So, I here now ask you to head over to Austin360.com (the link aboveA) and vote Robuck in regardless if your ethical senses say it’s not right to vote from Dallas. Because once Mr. Robuck sees that GRiD was responsible for getting him ino the #1 spot, then I’m certain my broadcast career will blow up soon after.

I try hard to find these win-win situations.

Aww…ain’t he cute? Now vote him #1!

Gordon Biersch Opens in Plano

Buddy Zach asked me to join him in going to the VIP preview party of the Gordon Biersch Brewery Restaurant tonight all the way up in Plano. And like, furthest Plano. I’m not sure what exists after north after where we were but it was hella far. But I was happy to oblige.

After making the long drive to the Shops at Legacy, Buddy Z was running behind so I figured I’d check out the stores across the street at the busier part. I’ve been there once before only partook in a movie at the Plano Angelika and a couple of drinks and a bad Beatles cover band at Martini Park. The area is definitely the scene for Plano as the sidewalks were packed and restaurant patios full and music blaring from inconspicuous speakers in trees and the ground. Hell, there’s even a big lake or pond or whatever body of water term is appropriate with a fountain in the middle. It was almost heaven. That is if the air up north wasn’t so thin. Chuckle. If I can figure my new phone out, I’ll put the picture I think I took up on here in a bit.

Otherwise, the shops don’t seem so accessible as much as they should be. The problem with many of these boutique shopping villages that want to attract everybody is that they don’t put the obvious stores in. I might have an interest one day in a wrought iron bed or a fancy pastry but if I wanted to simply browse through books or check out some new CD’s, God forbid I do it there. West Village was similar but they put in a Border’s finally and Legacy Trading Company was actually good for that too. Why don’t these places put more time killers in there?

B Z finally made it and in we went to the packed house at Biersch. According to B Z, the place wasn’t opening until Monday but showing off its wares tonight. He had the inside track because he wrote this place up for his paper (the link isn’t up yet, I think tomorrow it should be) Kind of strange being that a mid-week preview would have been more suitable so they could start making some bank this weekend but then again, I ain’t no restaurant manager/owner. So, we check in, wait a while for a beer at the uber-busy bar (complimentary) and headed to find a spot.

Appetizers were on hand floating around on white platters supported by roaming waiters. Fortunately some pot stickers found our way and whatever was in those, was h-e-a-v-e-n. One waiter “had no idea” but he knew chicken was in there and I thought I tasted some horseradish and perhaps felt some slight cabbage shreds but the menu (PDF ALERT!). The outer pastry was both crusty and soggy; the latter I assume being an accident sitting just too long in its own sauces which was probably like two seconds because they were otherwise fresh.

We saw other food floating around but somehow they never headed in our direction. I was sad because I was most curious about their menu which Z described as variety in the sense of New American. After reading their menu, think fancy bar food a la TABC or Maguire’s.

But the selling point of the place is their beers. This is their pride and joy with good reason. They weren’t bad but you’re hearing that from someone who prefers to drink only one kind of beer and nothing else. Z recommended the Czech Lager as the closest in taste to my girl which it may have been but I don’t know since I’m not a beer expert at tasting. It wasn’t ice cold which might have made a difference but I could sense similarities however it had a stronger bitterness to it. Would I drink it again? Perhaps. Would I order it again? Not if Stella was in the house. Then the waiter gave me a Marzen which looked beautifully golden in its tall glass and nice head. Oh, it looked like haps heaven. That is until I tasted it. It has great and probably perfect body for a beer but its antiseptic taste threw me off. Big time. I felt like I was drinking my pediatrician’s office when I was a kid. Ironically, it’s their most popular beer. I tasted Z’s dark Shwarziber which was OK considering I cannot stand dark beers save for Shiner Black. It tasted like pretty much every other dark beer I’ve ever tried and didn’t like however it goes down smoothly.

No more food headed our way and clearly the party was starting to wind down. But when the lights went up at 9:30ish, I was like whoa, let’s jet! So off we went back across the street to Sal’s Pizza. I was hoping it was merely a coincidental moniker but it is the same as the Wycliff location and I was soon appropriately disappointed. Their pizza isn’t bad and hits the spot for pizza cravings but that place is never my first choice. But the pepperoni and green olives hit the spot…and definitely my arteries!

Double checked the site and yes, GB opens Monday. Try it and tell me how the rest of the food tastes.

Mesquite Elections

Well, I’m a little sad because Saturday were Mesquite’s municipal elections in which my fantabulous sister-in-law, Rachel Lopez, was running for City Council and did not end up elected. Sure I may be a little biased but truly felt she offered something different than all the other candidates and now elected officials. I think she offered a little more homegrown attitude to what Mesquite needs and instead of focusing on businesses, she wanted to focus on people and the growth of the city.

Her chief opponent won convincingly but soon after, we heard of questionable tactics used by the slate the Mesquite Firefighter Association put together. Voters being intimidated at the polls, opponent signs being slashed and even Greg Noschese handing out scratch asking people to remember him at the polls. Just sucks to hear that stuff because a) I want to have true faith in the voting system which is really hard after watching this and b) hearing all that stuff doesn’t really surprise me. I find it curious that he has 900 votes in early election and Rachel and the other candidate had only 300+. His campaign did nothing to reach out to the people where she walked door to door and campaigned the old fashioned way, by earning people’s trust and giving them an ear. No-cheese merely had his firemen do the word. Additionally, they broke several rules not only intimidating folks if that was the case but also campaigning while in uniform. Uhhh, conflict of interest? Yep! The other candidate, Dan Aleman used his pulpit as a pastor to campaign which is in violation of most non-profit type entities but he did.

And the slate includes other candidates that are primarily going to whitewash city council into another ineffective group where nothing gets done. As Rachel campaigned, even I had hope, and still do, that the city could be more than what it was - a dumping ground and almost a joke. Now, I just feel self-serving interests will be met and another term where city council nary bats a wink at the important stuff.

Yes, this is all very easy to say that because she’s my sister-in-law, it’s easy for me to bitch and moan and whine and cry foul play. I get that completely but that doesn’t hinder me from seeing the actual work that goes into a campaign and election and while I was spending my time in Mesquite helping out, hardly did I see similar efforts by other candidates much less the now-electees.

Clearly, money was the only thing talking in this election. No-cheese only wanted this to add to his resume because he had no conviction in his public forums. Just cheesey gestures. He should do the city good because he kept touting his term as president of the Chamber of Commerce yet what he always failed to connect was that he kept mentioning how businesses kept leaving the city under his term. So, with that kind of leadership, all I can say is good luck Mesquite. You’ve made another bad decision.

Austin City Limits plans?

That might depend on the bands and if you can figure them out from this mash-up then you can start making your plans. Gorilla v. Bear links us to Car Stereo (Wars) for the tip as well as revealing the potential Lollapalooza Lineup. However, both fests, I could probably care less about. Me outdoors in blazing heat just to listen to music is SO not my idea of fun. I’ll stick with my iTunes. Also, not TOO sure how reliable this is for a definitive hint to the lineup, but at the very least, the mix is SWEEET!

UPDATE:

OK, yeah, it’s legit. Just saw the official mention at ACL’s website.

Fort Worth is looking a little brighter

And the HRC is pretty happy about it. Here’s their word:

Dan Barrett Elected to Texas House of Representatives!
Joel Burns Elected to Fort Worth City Council!

HRC members have been active in these campaigns since Day One!

HRC staff and members have helped elect Dan Barrett to the Texas House of Representatives, moving the Texas legislature one seat closer to a fair majority.

Election Night Results:
Dan Barrett 5,365
Mark Shelton 4,913

Fort Worth has made history by electing its first openly gay City Council Member, Joel Burns.

Election Night Results:
Joel Burns 1,796
Juan Rangel 1,525

For too long Texans have been fighting against legislative leadership that seeks to attack the GLBT community. With more fair-minded legislators GLBT Texans may one day have equal justice under the law.

Mayor Said Knock You Out

Or rather, the mayor is going to knock you out. Fortunately not our diplomatic and sophisticated mayor. Eustace mayor, Laura Ward, obviously not on a re-election campaign, got all Million Dollar Baby last weekend in a Gun Barrel City bar on this chick…in front of police officers! Now that’s ballsy.

Police: Eustace Mayor Punches Woman, 5 Cops Witness Attack

Vote for me or you’ll get knocked the f*&% out

In other cancellation news…

…fortunately not local but unfortunate for those going to Austin City Limits. The White Stripes canceled their gigs because Meg White is a drama queen with acute anxiety. I got one word for that. Zoloft. Look into it. They had two shows planned but now ticket owners are gonna have to get a refund. Just thank the heavens their European tour is still in tact.

Whew. Thanks to Pitchfork for the heads up.

By the way, Kaiser Chiefs…not so bad. Cute pop rock stuff that we’ve all heard before but not tragically bad.

“Where my Zoloft at??”

And then there’s Fraud

I just got this message but I will admit, I didn’t look into it. You come off of a late late night with four hours sleep, hangover and a four-hour drive home and you see how far your venture for research goes. But I must say, after reading this, I got a bit worried about my  stay last night at the Quality Inn (blush) in Houston. I sure as heck hope they won’t be pulling this kind of stuff. Fraud and identity theft CREEP me out. Not to mention mildew, which I think I noticed a bit on the ceiling of my bathroom in the hotel (cringe). Read on:

As Quoted by Craig Henderson:

DO NOT stay at the Rodeway Inn Downtown San Antonio

The rooms are mold and mildwew infested.

Also…
The front desk personnel are committing fraud with credit cards. I was charged $1200 on my credit card after Mr Texas for rooms that I was NOT responsible for nor did book. I have contacted my credit card company, my attorney and will contact the San Antonio Better Business Bureau tomorrow along with the San Antonio Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Rodeway Corporate office. If they will do it to me they will do it to ANYONE.

DO NOT stay at the Rodeway Inn Downtown San Antonio

Now, I don’t know who Craig Henderson is and I can’t say if this really happened or if maybe he was embittered by an experience and spreading some not so kind words. I don’t know and right now, my droopy eyes keep me from caring too much. BUT, let this be a reminder to always check your credit cards and TOTALLY check your hotel rooms before sleeping. I died when I realized I hadn’t taken my can of Lysol to spray the room down.

Rock this Country

For your Thursday night considerations notwithstanding the cost of gas, might I suggest Rockin’ Rodeo? Yeeehawww. That is if you can’t get your country/cotton-eye-joe self rounded up anywhere around these parts. Rodeo has some good stuff even if it is all the way out in Denton.
