Gratis Hourly Radio

That would mean free Hourly Radio which would mean music. Check out the news here. And I love their new logo/image/whatever. Very Depeche Mode/Pet Shop Boys.

Bad Idea of the Day

Electronica musician Jeremy Gloff posted the following on a myspace bulletin:

Party at my apartment tomorrow night! Songs from my next CD

If you want to come let me know. It’s not a PARTY party but it’s a party. Bring food everyone else is! it’s gonna be a bunch of people who all don’t know each other, so you won’t be out of place!!! Email me for directions! I’ll be going a couple new songs.

I’m tempted to ask all of you to contact him for directions. What’s more, he’s based out of Tampa so asking him for directions from Dallas could have some hilarity factor. Of course this is me going back to my prank calling roots. But it was just something I was thinking about. Not at all suggesting anyone to do it. No, not at all. Me? Never. How could such an idea get in your head anyway?

This guy has tons of CDs to his name (13 if I counted correctly) but failed to put his profile under the Music Artist section of myspace so I’m not quite sure what he sounds like. But I recommend checking out some of his reviews of other music. Seems to have a good ear.

Hello from the Lone Star State, Mr. Gloff. Photo by Ryan Prado.

Wall of Sound band shedule

Ugh. I’ve been waiting for this forever. Of course, I haven’t gotten my tickets yet so I guess I can’t complain. The lineup is fairly impressive but dangit if the people I want to see are scattered throughout the whole day. Maybe its incentive to hang out in Cowtown for a while and make a run to Pizzeria Uno in downtown.

So if you’re anal like me, you’ll want to write your schedule out just to be on top of things and have decent beer runs. The bold ones are the bands I’m shooting for. Maybe I’ll see you there.

So outta the loop

Or just getting old enough to be completely unhip but I’m not too sure what the MTV-U channel is. I have an idea it’s just college music stuff but otherwise, I have no idea how long it’s been around or what. Just nice to see, if I’m correct of course, MTV actually get back into the music biz. Not that I really care one way or another. Never really watched it much in the first place.

But anyway, I just got this notice from The Hourly Radio about their Deaf Ears video:

Hey everyone!

The music video for “Deaf Ears” is now playing on MTV-U and we need your help to make sure it stays in rotation.

You can help keep it in rotation by clicking here and voting. Voting last all this week and you can vote as many times as you’d like.

I just checked it out and voted myself but as of right now, they are ranked 4th. D’oh. So check it out, vote if you like and help make these Texas boys international rock stars. But you can watch it here first if you like.

Election Time

And this time it’s important. Don’t forget to vote for this year’s Dallas Observer Music Awards. In fact, I would recommend doing it this very minute since you are reading this right now. I was good and voted early last week at Lakewood Theater and got to see some good bands along with it. Most notably Sparklepussy Barbie who I’ve decided to have a total man-crush on. The lead singer went and got a beard which makes him all hot but the clincher is their bassist who was born for the rock stage. He oozes ‘rock god’ and for whatever reason, that makes him a total sexy beast. Names? I dunno. Can never figure ‘em out via their page or myspace. Oh and their music’s good too. No, really.

In fact, since it’s been a while, I’m giving him the coveted Crush of the Week award.

Totally Free Download

Dang. Local band The Hourly Radio is getting big for their britches and good for them. They’ve been touring all over the US and Europe and now American Eagle Outfitters has gotten a hold of them. Not really sure what the campaign is but American Eagle’s website is offering a free download of their song Deaf Ears from their debut full-length album History Will Never Hold Me. I already have that so I won’t need the download but I do love it and hope you make a stop at the site to snag the song and give them a listen. You won’t regret it. Took me a while to get past the almost too-high vocals but now it’s totally digable.

And if you make it out to American Eagle, they’ll be playing the Deaf Ears video for ya. At least that’s what the band says. But if you can’t, I’ll put it right down below for ya.

Although, I must say, if you’re needing clothes, head over to The Gap and fast. Jeans for $15 and lots more for cheap. Go now, yo!

One of the more creepier polls…

…I’ve received on the Interweb. I don’t get too involved with these because so many go around and they sometimes burden the bulletins, but every so often one will stick out. The title to this one sent by local DJ Captain Groovy is - Best Song to Kill Yourself With - and asks the following:

when you’re found dead in a bathtub, what’s going to be playing on repeat in the background?

And some of the responses were:

1. julia- “love hurts”, gram parsons

2. Haunted George “Walkin’ on Sunshine” Katrina & The Wavez

3. Bryan Schmitz “Splish splash” by Bobby Darrin

4. Hank - “Sailing”, Christopher Cross

5. Mr. Red Cat - “Perfect Day” Lou Reed

6. MUDI - I was going to be funny but, “Pink and Velvet” Berlin

7. Captain Groovy- “Why Kill Time When You Can Kill Yourself” by Cabaret Voltaire

I do think that if I were going to kill myself to a song, it had be better darn depressing enough for me to do it. Or be that old Hampsterdance song over and over. And if I was going to kill myself with a song, I’d probably pick vinyl over cd. Sharp edges, bigger circumference…dunno…seems ample enough to do the trick.

But as of now, I have no inclination. Now, songs to kill other people with…I can make you a mixtape on that.

What?

Throwin’ you a Bone

I imagine with the nice weather happenin’, people are going to be out in force tonight. I may hit the town after my Bond-age but still have yet to decide where. This is starting to sound good though. The Bone’s rooftop will be open for a Reggae Party. Well, they are calling it Texas Reggae but not sure what that is. Guess I’ll just have to take a listen.

And if you hurry, you can still get it on the Seven Deadly Sins action at Kettle Art tonight. It’s a total night of art and music in Deep Ellum tonight and better yet, you can just walk. Like they used to do in the old days.

Hip to be square

Sorry for the minimal postings this week. With a holiday, article deadline and housesitting away from home, I’ve been distracted. Should be back on track soon.

In the meantime, there are some unique options for going out these next couple o’ days. So get to it.

I’ve yet to check out Lord Byron’s Panoptikon despite his generous invitations. I will, Byron, I promise. Tonight he is hosting Austin electronica band, Hipnautica, their first time in Dallas. This is how they read:

Hipnautica, one of Austin’s most dynamic electronic based bands, a musical chameleon of sorts. Often presenting live electro industrial performances with influences from synth pop, middle eastern rhythms, and powerful operatic vocalizations backed by live bass/guitar in conjunction with all original mezmerizing visualizations and sometimes theatric dancers. Hipnautica was voted as one of Austin top 10 Gothic/Industrial bands by the Austin Chronicle Readers 2006 and has been together about a year. Thier first show in Dallas will be July 5th at Club One and will feature 3 of the core members (Erik, Pixie and Sky) focusing on some of thier strongest material - some of which is featured on MySpace and from Sky..s solo album Mortal Shock which was released early last year. We hope you can join us for our first appearance in Dallas.

‘ll be at House of Blues tonight though for Lez Zeppelin. I figure it’s simple enough to figure they are a band of lesbians that cover Led Zeppelin. Cool.

Metro Retro Bar is closing down with a farewell party July 7. This place is so Austin Powers kitschy with great design but apparently not the business. That’s a shame because it seemed like the best and only option for getting on the dancefloor to those great 70s and 80s hits. I don’t recommend too much in Addison but one night won’t kill you for cheeky fun.

My dream on the verge of becoming true

I’ve always said that my ideal dream job would be a Band Namer. And now’s my chance…well, it’s your chance too but whatever. Sadly, The Valentines are changing monikers:

Hello Everyone,

As you may or may not be aware, we are in the process of renaming the band. This is due to prior use of the The Valentines by the classic R&B group as well as the Australian (AC/DC frontman) rock band by the same name. We’ve gone through hundreds of possibilities at this point and really want to be sure that we capture the vibe of our music and stage performances.

This is why we’re enlisting YOUR help!!!!

The plan:

-For you to respond to this message with as many ideas as you can.
-We’ll shorten the list to 10 names, then send an invitation for you to vote on your favorite name.

That’s IT!!!
YOU NAME THE BAND!!!

I’m only certain mine will prevail but to be fair, of course, I must encourage everyone to participate. Dang, I love this band and I love this name for them. I just wish that cd I got from one of their shows didn’t skip, thus it would have been worth thousands once the name change happens.

Blurry but cool.
