GRiD Redux

OK, so, I’ve been so busy working on Hint of Mint that I’ve sort of left GRiD off the grid. So I apologize to all eight of my readers for having posted nothing in a while.

At the same time, I have been thinking what it is I wanted to do over here. I think Cindy and I are really going to work on Mint becoming something so clearly my focus is over there. But this begged the question, do I continue over here at GRiD? Cut it off? Change it up? Blah and blah.

Then, I had my conversation the other day with Cari about our proposed plans to embark on our Taqueria Tour of Dallas. It was at that moment that I realized what I should be doing here. I love me some food and I really love trying out new places to dine. And even if it’s something noteworthy at a fast-food place, I like telling people about it. So instead of the random Dallas news or opinion, I think Get Rich in Dallas will now focus on the food in and around Dallas. Where I’ve gone, what I recommend and whatever else comes to mind while I partake in fine and not-so-fine dining around these parts.

I’d love company on this as well. If you have a suggestion, please, feel free to join. Besides, the more opinions the merrier. So, from here on, you’re still Getting Rich…just with a fork and knife.

Bone Appetite!
(yeah, I know, it’s Bon)

Sonic’s Fried Ice Cream Blast…isn’t one

I saw Sonic’s latest offering while partaking in their (best idea ever) Happy Hour for half-off drinks. Now, fried ice cream has never impressed me. The idea, the sound, the look - just something I never place high on the list but for some reason the convenience of it in a cup sounded slightly enticing and by the following description, seemed like something I might want to sink my teeth into:

Fried Ice Cream Blast™

Summer fever has kicked into full force, and you may need something to cool you down. SONIC® has just the remedy. A creamy, crunchy blend of vanilla soft serve, cinnamon crisps, caramel and whipped topping. It’s a fun twist on an authentic favorite, and it’s so good you’ll want to share this sweet dose of deliciousness with all your friends. So grab one tonight because SONIC® is open ’til midnight or later and is Even Sweeter After DarkSM.

Now, I don’t consider Sonic a primo dessert stop but they can do in a slight pinch if I have a sweet tooth and added laziness that prevents me from getting out of my car. So after today’s lunch, I decided dessert sounded like a nice idea in the hot day and lo and behold there was a Sonic.

The picture of crumbly cinnamon crisps on top of whipped “cream” seemed like a good introduction to the sweet that would be soon blasting my mouth. However, it was the only bit of flavor in a dull dessert. I forget to expect anything from soft serve ice cream or whatever it’s called. Definitely not Blue Bell. More than likely a concoction in which one just adds water. I began to swirl the topping of cream and cinnamon into the rest but no satisfaction could be attained by the now muted cinnamon flavor. And where was this caramel I kept searching for? If anything might have saved this icy confection, a ribbon of caramel could have done the trick but alas, I tasted none. Nor found any so maybe it was just a mistake made by the crew. No worries, by this point, I’ve made up my mind.

Thumbs down! (Photo by House of Sims)

So I won’t plan to “share this sweet dose of deliciousness with all my friends.” It might be the only friend I have left! In fact, I’ll discourage anyone to not partake in this missed-the-mark dessert. Forgo the dessert craving and the calories for a drink instead which can be just as fattening and desserty enough. Might I recommend the fresh fruit strawberry slush? I wish I had recommended that to myself.

Didju know tomorrow (ok, today) is National Cheesecake Day?

Annnd, did you know that Cheesecake Factory is the place to go to partake in the national holiday. Yep, for cheap, they are offering slices of cake for a buck fifty. But only one per slice as it says on their site. I’m stil debating going being fat and lactose intolerant and all but damn, cheesecake is good. Here’s the word from the Cheesecake Factory:

The Cheesecake Factory Serves Up a Delicious 30th Anniversary Celebration!

Celebrating “30 Delicious Years,” The Cheesecake Factory is serving up several sweet initiatives throughout 2008.

To kick-off the anniversary celebration and in commemoration of National Cheesecake Day on July 30th, 2008, The Cheesecake Factory restaurants will offer every delicious slice of its more than 30 varieties of cheesecake with a dollop of nostalgia by featuring all cheesecakes at $1.50 per slice, limit one per guest, dine in only, on that day—as they were when the restaurant first opened in 1978.

In addition, a special, limited edition cheesecake, the 30th Anniversary Chocolate Cake Cheesecake, will be introduced on July 30th with $0.25 from the sale of each slice sold this year benefiting the national hunger-relief organization, America’s Second Harvest – The Nation’s Food Bank Network. Additional activities will be announced throughout the year.

Gordon Biersch Opens in Plano

Buddy Zach asked me to join him in going to the VIP preview party of the Gordon Biersch Brewery Restaurant tonight all the way up in Plano. And like, furthest Plano. I’m not sure what exists after north after where we were but it was hella far. But I was happy to oblige.

After making the long drive to the Shops at Legacy, Buddy Z was running behind so I figured I’d check out the stores across the street at the busier part. I’ve been there once before only partook in a movie at the Plano Angelika and a couple of drinks and a bad Beatles cover band at Martini Park. The area is definitely the scene for Plano as the sidewalks were packed and restaurant patios full and music blaring from inconspicuous speakers in trees and the ground. Hell, there’s even a big lake or pond or whatever body of water term is appropriate with a fountain in the middle. It was almost heaven. That is if the air up north wasn’t so thin. Chuckle. If I can figure my new phone out, I’ll put the picture I think I took up on here in a bit.

Otherwise, the shops don’t seem so accessible as much as they should be. The problem with many of these boutique shopping villages that want to attract everybody is that they don’t put the obvious stores in. I might have an interest one day in a wrought iron bed or a fancy pastry but if I wanted to simply browse through books or check out some new CD’s, God forbid I do it there. West Village was similar but they put in a Border’s finally and Legacy Trading Company was actually good for that too. Why don’t these places put more time killers in there?

B Z finally made it and in we went to the packed house at Biersch. According to B Z, the place wasn’t opening until Monday but showing off its wares tonight. He had the inside track because he wrote this place up for his paper (the link isn’t up yet, I think tomorrow it should be) Kind of strange being that a mid-week preview would have been more suitable so they could start making some bank this weekend but then again, I ain’t no restaurant manager/owner. So, we check in, wait a while for a beer at the uber-busy bar (complimentary) and headed to find a spot.

Appetizers were on hand floating around on white platters supported by roaming waiters. Fortunately some pot stickers found our way and whatever was in those, was h-e-a-v-e-n. One waiter “had no idea” but he knew chicken was in there and I thought I tasted some horseradish and perhaps felt some slight cabbage shreds but the menu (PDF ALERT!). The outer pastry was both crusty and soggy; the latter I assume being an accident sitting just too long in its own sauces which was probably like two seconds because they were otherwise fresh.

We saw other food floating around but somehow they never headed in our direction. I was sad because I was most curious about their menu which Z described as variety in the sense of New American. After reading their menu, think fancy bar food a la TABC or Maguire’s.

But the selling point of the place is their beers. This is their pride and joy with good reason. They weren’t bad but you’re hearing that from someone who prefers to drink only one kind of beer and nothing else. Z recommended the Czech Lager as the closest in taste to my girl which it may have been but I don’t know since I’m not a beer expert at tasting. It wasn’t ice cold which might have made a difference but I could sense similarities however it had a stronger bitterness to it. Would I drink it again? Perhaps. Would I order it again? Not if Stella was in the house. Then the waiter gave me a Marzen which looked beautifully golden in its tall glass and nice head. Oh, it looked like haps heaven. That is until I tasted it. It has great and probably perfect body for a beer but its antiseptic taste threw me off. Big time. I felt like I was drinking my pediatrician’s office when I was a kid. Ironically, it’s their most popular beer. I tasted Z’s dark Shwarziber which was OK considering I cannot stand dark beers save for Shiner Black. It tasted like pretty much every other dark beer I’ve ever tried and didn’t like however it goes down smoothly.

No more food headed our way and clearly the party was starting to wind down. But when the lights went up at 9:30ish, I was like whoa, let’s jet! So off we went back across the street to Sal’s Pizza. I was hoping it was merely a coincidental moniker but it is the same as the Wycliff location and I was soon appropriately disappointed. Their pizza isn’t bad and hits the spot for pizza cravings but that place is never my first choice. But the pepperoni and green olives hit the spot…and definitely my arteries!

Double checked the site and yes, GB opens Monday. Try it and tell me how the rest of the food tastes.

Why I’m Fat

I completely blame my family. If it wasn’t for dad’s support of the chocolate industry or mom’s proclivities to pizza, I’m quite sure I’d be the slender athletic person I see myself as…usually while tending to my Boston Market pot pie. But I get this email from my cousin who I see maybe once every two years.

thought everyone would like this

There was a time when one coney combo would have been enough. But, not anymore. Introducing a deal guaranteed to give you double the coney for less money. For a limited time get 2 regular chili cheese coney combos for only $5.00 plus tax. Each includes your choice of regular fries or tots and a medium soft drink. Just click the coupon to print.

I usually just head to Sonic to take advantage of their sweet Happy Hour for half-off drinks and rarely find myself there for food now so I hope this doesn’t lead me into temptation.

Throwing up in my mouth

Ugh, I really wish I hadn’t just read this.

So, some meat got stolen. 15,000 pounds of it. Yeah. The truck is recovered, some meat is gone and now health peeps are launching a search for people who may have bought the (stolen?) beef because it’s tainted with E. coli.

What made me throw up is the fact that the article says Chicken Shack over on Lamar “unknowingly purchased the contaminated beef from someone within the past few days.” Unknowingly? Someone?? Who does business like that? Fortunately, they said they hadn’t opened and sold any of the meat.

In the meantime, don’t buy meat from “someone” labled EST. 13116.” If you did, well, yer an idiot and you should just throw it out now.

i Fratellis just lost a customer

Yesterday, in a leisurely drive at noon, I was on Hall Street @ Cedar Springs/Turtle Creek heading east toward Uptown from Oak Lawn. I’m behind one car at a light and a car pulls next to me on my right in the turn lane. Light turns green, we proceed only to find out, Turn Lane Guy is busting in on my lane and wedged his d@mn a$$ in front of my car almost causing a wreck. Inches from wreckage I appropriately laid in on my horn. He tried to pull off that I didn’t know what I was doing look and offered no gestures of apology.

Thankfully, my phone was handy. As I got it ready, I think he may have figured what I was doing and started zooming away. I was able to snap this shot.

See as he tries to get away? And notice no turn signal either. If you even think I caught the pic in between light blinks, then be off with you. Fortunately, I noticed way back at the light that sign on top of the car clearly says i Fratellis. So in passive aggressive nature, I have decided not to patronize their pizzeria. Which saddens me because that place is fan-friggin-tastic. But thanks to their idiot in a white Nissan Altima (I think?), I will never partake in their pies again. And it made going to Pastazios Pizza for lunch that day oh so sweeter.

Screw you i Fratellis delivery driver. I hope your car turns over one day and the pizza boxes will open and the hot cheese will burn your face. And then I will stand over the carnage laughing with my Pastazios pizza slice and my vengeance.

Shake it

Big D’s Dogs is offering a free shake with purchase of a dog AND shake. Yeah, a somewhat costly way to get a free shake in the cold weather but for lunchtime with the office gang, it could be a bargain! Here’s their word:

So stop lallygagging and come on in and cure your hunger! Mention this bulletin to receive special, by the way I recommend a dulce de leche and cinnamon shake.

Sounds like some yum.
