Dan Paul does it all!

You know I love me some Dan Paul, Dallas’ local renaissance man. Just missed his live music show couple weeks ago by this much but not gonna miss tonight’s art show. Seems like Starbucks @ West Village wants to get it on some of the local art and music action so, according to Paul, “this is the launch of a new series of live music, local art and spoken word events at Dallas’ largest Starbucks–located in the heart of Uptown.”

So, I suggest you get yer caffeine on and head over there tonight. Of course, I’m secretly hoping for frappuccino samples!

Plant yer SEED for art’s sake

So this is what you’re doing tonight. No question about it and if you don’t, then you’ll get GRiD-locked and you don’t even want to know what that is.

Tonight, you are heading over to the Sons of Hermann Hall for some big time art and music that will benefit Art Conspiracy. And really, you should because it’s only five bucks to get in. After that, yer scratch can go toward the art auction. Then you can see some sweet local music and then get yer mug taken in the mug shot booth.

Totally rad. So go. And if that doesn’t convince you, maybe Miss Cari from Lovie can do so. She’s much cuter than I am anyways.

It’s time for another Art Conspiracy event! Last year we started our smaller summertime SEED event to help raised funds as we sought our 501c3 status. We had a lot of fun doing a smaller event that allowed us to showcase a handful of artists…so we decided to do it again this year.

In short, the money we raise through SEED will help us put on a better blockbuster Art Conspiracy event in December and that means our beneficiary will see more money in the long run.

SEED 2008 will feature the work of 15 local artists who have been busily filling out Moleskine journals since late May and will feature live auctions of work from other local artist. We’ll also announce the beneficiary for our 2008 event. More details are in the attached press release. Please let me know if you have any questions, need more info, etc.

Thanks,
Cari

She even sent a link of pics taken by Erica Felicella of local artist Richard Ross (who I keep forgetting to publicly declare I have a total man-crush on) and his journal.

Go to this or die

Clint’s my neighbor and all around awesome artist. I still want Afro Woman…grrr. I hope you check it out tomorrow. He’s a good guy and his wire arts are crazy amazing. Plus, it’s part of the AFI fest so if you’ve missed the films (guilty) then you can get in on some of the other action. And if you don’t, then I’ll have to chop your head off.

Not to be too Formal

I must admit, this weather is the kind to keep me in but an exception could be Kettle Art’s new opening, Formal featuring the art of Sergio Garcia. You’re wondering who he is? Thanks to Frank Campagna’s video work, we can get some insight to the guy here:

So then what to do after a cold rainy night of art? You walk next door to Club Dada where the official after party is. Dada goes DJ-like with The Party, Cool-Out and Hot Flash spinning the tunes. Almost like a two-fer one night tonight. So do it.

Magnolia has art?

It does tonight. And yes, it usually does. But tonight’s much more special as a bud of mine’s show is opening up with a reception at 8 p.m. So I suggest you hightail it down there, get your face in the scene and into some art, then buy a ticket to No Country for Old Men because that movie, despite being an incarnation of Fargo, is pretty amazing.

Go!

Education sucks

Well, only when it conflicts with watching my Mavericks and then seeing Stackhouse. But otherwise, stay in school!

After class tonight I’ll be at the Meridian Room partaking in art and drink. I think you should join me.

Suds are still around

Bar of Soap owner Charlie Gilder wants to reassure everybody of one thing.

“We are not closing down.”

With buzz going about the bar not filing for an SUP and simply needing scratch, rumors, according to Gilder, began to stir that the 21 year-old Expo Park staple was shutting its doors. Not the case despite a slump of business in the past few months. The Fair didn’t bring in as much money as usual and business stayed slow after the Fair’s run. “People aren’t just coming down,” he said but assures that after Thanksgiving, business seems to be picking up gradually.

But they are short in the wallet hence last weekend’s fundraiser show and art auction. It wasn’t that Gilder didn’t file for an SUP, he just didn’t have the money to do it and according to him, he needs $1175 to do so. “The problem is money,” he said after explaining some of his goals for the bar itself with some remodeling and touch-ups desperately needed. But ultimately, he says, “We’re gonna be OK.”

Despite his feelings about the whole SUP business.

While he’s confident he’ll pass and willing to go through the steps, he calls the whole situation unfair. “I fail to see how it’s even legal. Looks to me like the legal precedent, is once your there and operational that they can’t come and kick you out arbitrarily. I’m confused about this. It’s completely unjust. It’s tyranny,” he vents, “I didn’t think this is the way the United States works. However, I’m not disappointed in the direction the area is going.” He figures with new condos going up that it’s just going to help the business.

So if you missed all the action last weekend, Gilder probably wouldn’t mind you stopping by this weekend to see Darlington tomorrow and The Deadites on Saturday. At they very least, Bar of Soap has their groove on.
