Submarine Channel hits Dallas

Or rather, its come and gone. I came across this interesting little video today from the Submarine Channel. Their latest series of min-movies is titled Dear Oprah and tracks the trend of voting throughout the nation. It’s titled as such because director Kasper Verkaik believes that she may be the only person who can truly change America. He may be right.

In this episode, they make a stop in Dallas exploring the Latino trend in the city and where elections could be headed. Good stuff.

Past Post Referral

A LONG while back I was pondering movie performances by some leading ladies. You can check that here but my point was to list all the truly great performances in cinematic history by a female. I don’t expect to pull an AFI type list, but mostly just to get my head wrapped around some amazing feats by some amazing actresses.

So, why do I bring it up? I have one to add to the list and that would be Giulietta Masina in Federico Fellini’s Nights of Cabiria. The movie about a prostitute who really wants more than what life is offering is hilarious, heartbreaking and worth a look. Parts of it almost make you wonder if Pretty Woman was derived from this. It would seem so but this is so much a superior film (like that would be hard). Cabiria’s resolution is enigmatic in the vein of No Country for Old Men but getting there with her is like wanting the best for your sister/friend and going through the ups and downs right there with her. Damn, Fellini is genius in making you care about her and still having his avant-garde moments.

I highly recommend and really hope you get to watch it.

OK, moving on…

iTunes finally published my iMix of G.R.i.D. Picks of 2007 (2006 is here) so if you missed out on the free original (shhh) then download most of it here. I just wish ALL the songs would appear. Dunno quite know how their selections work…or don’t work. Enjoy!

Cadbury Egg Rip-Off

If you think you’re getting conned just at the gas station by money-hungry oil corporations (hand raised), then watch this from Good Morning America today. Everybody’s ripping every one of us off. The excuses however are priceless.

And for you Cadbury Egg lovers (hand raised again), the Conan bit at the beginning of this package irked me more than anything. OK, that and the paper towels. Thankfully, or maybe not, the package introduced me to Mouseprint.org, a consumer watch blog that’s “exposing the strings and catches buried in fine print” and stuff like this which GMA points out. Of course, this will just add to my paranoia and distrust of the world around me. But at least I’ll be informed.

Hot Blog - JukeboxMafia

Well, my chum Blake has finally put his vast knowledge of music to use over at JukeboxMafia and I could be none the happier. He used to do some music writing over in the New Orleans area but upon trekking to Dallas, for obvious reasons, he was a bit distracted. I always hoped he’d get back into it and thus I’m ecstatic that he’s making the leap into the blogosphere with his postings of his “interesting 45s” finds. However, if you know the guy, this disclaimer kind of comes as no surprise:

I’m pretty lazy, so don’t expect a lot of exhaustive information or research…

Seriously, it’s just a part of his charm. Welcome along, Blakety Blakes. Glad to have you in the cyber-hood.

Blog Referral Morning

Dal-Brian over at Metroblog Dallas tells us what it really means to be gentrified and why that’s not what Deep Ellum is going through. Gentrified or not, I still think a Starbucks should be put up there somewhere, but I digress.

You go, boy.

A chick is suing American Airlines for “involuntarily and unknowingly joining the mile high club” according to Scanner. She was on her way back here from L.A. only to find some extra hair product in her coif. Yipes but kinda funny.

DMN’s Metro Blog leads us to a list of Important Dallas Women here over the past 100 years which in turn was compiled and provided by the YWCA. Mary Suhm? Really? Hmmm.

Cops and Bloggers

Ever want to vent about that mean ole cop who pulled you over? Or did a really nice officer come over and help you with that flat tire? Whatever the case may be, you can now rate that cop (if you recall his or her name) at RateMyCop.com. Now, I hope you don’t go and be butts about it because even though we have a few bad apples in the Dallas Police Department, there are many good cops. So be nice, be fair. I’m lucky to say I know a few cops enough to call them buds and they have the people’s best interest. Sometimes they are a little jaded and they get paid crap but anyone who is putting their life on the line for my sorry butt has my respect big time.

It’s a little weird though that all of the names of our police force are online. I guess that’s easy to find out but still…

On a scale from 1 to 10.
