I saw this movie on Saturday and it sucked because it takes place in a snowy cold Canada yet it was all warm that day. Today would have been much more appropriate. I was looking forward to this movie because I am without a doubt in love with Julie Christie. She reaks of elegance which is ironic to say but completely appropriate. And I love it even more that she’s basically a goddess but has the talents to back it up than say, oh, maybe a Kim Basinger.
This understated performance as a woman in the beginning stages of Alzheimer’s was perfect. No overacting, no dramatic monologues for Oscar consideration, no nothing. Thank God Meryl Streep wasn’ in it. This movie was bare bones in its scenery, its story and its cast. Not only does Christie shine, the whole cast does, most notably her husband played with perfect sympathy and devotion by Gordon Pinsent. While the story could easily be a sappy tear-jerker, it stays on track to tell a simple story of a couple who can truly define what love means. The movie is magnficent but would never claim to be.
The film is directed by indie ingenue Sarah Polley. It’s well directed but not perfect. She’s nominated for best adapted screenplay which will probably lose to either No Country for Old Men or There Will Be Blood. But, I do think Julie Christie could win her second Academy Award for this role. She’s won both the Golden Globe and the Screen Actor’s Guild and those both usually precede an Oscar. I’m torn because I wouldn’t mind them giving it to Marion Cotillard for La Vie en Rose because I like those unknowns coming out of nowhere to kick a$$. BUT, I haven’t seen that movie yet. In fact, it’s next. So we shall see.
Otherwise, I HIGHLY recommend Away From Her.
