The Anti-Polyphonic Spree

I’ve always been curious about this band from my listings. Don’t know why because the name isn’t all that catchy. I think it was partly because they were considered more R&B/Soul than Jazz which is what I thought they were. Then I saw pics and saw them as the hip-hop version of the Polyphonic Spree but even that’s not a fair label and I hate when I can’t figure a band out. Jazz, funk, hip-hop - it all melds together with the Inner City All Stars, an amalgamation of geeky kids, funky kats, off the mark choreography and off the chain fusion topped by charismatic UNT alum, Calvin Sexton. This is my first glimpse into the ICAS and while it looks like the homegrown audiences are looking sparse and merely in need of a good time, I would have given anything to be in that Apollo audience where they received a standing ovation. Can’t say it’s hard to see why. They showed up and owned that place it looks like.

Gachet Moves Away

But not too far. Don’t worry, Lower Greenville isn’t dying. It’s just shifting around. Gachet Coffee Lounge is making the move to Capitol Street off of Henderson. If I’m not mistaken, this is where the new Shops on Henderson will be going up that’s supposed to stretch out the swanky trendy stuff that’s closer to Central. Their new address will be 2501 Capitol and will re-open in July. They closed shop yesterday. I just hope they will still have the rooftop movies. They never did the live music thing all that much on LG, so maybe with the new bigger shop, they’ll add that to their treats.

I didn’t know Gachet was on the up and up. They are opening a new store next month in the snazzy Victory Park. Good for Gachet! Love when local businesses do good. And yes they are a coffee shop but I bypass the caffeine for their sangria. Totally delicious and perfect for the summertime.

Welcome to the Hot Blog Stand

I’m a new fan of Advocate (not The Advocate) magazine (although I do like the other too) that’s all about the goings-on in Lakewood/East Dallas. It’s actually a pretty good rag with some good info and eye-catching layout. Just stay free guys and your in my good graces.

But after a year of reading Advocate I just now noticed their blog. Hmmm…maybe the layout on that page just upgraded but there’s some not bad stuff. So I felt it important to add Back Talk to the blogroll.

Welcome!

In May’s issue (careful, it’s PDF), Advocate gave me some good news about old John’s Cafe that used to be on Lower Greenville. A greasy spoon that had to hit the road after some 33 years. Yeouch. But thankfully the cafe is heading back to the old Nick’s Cafe spot at 1733 Greenville. Yum! Now I can gt cholesteroled the right way with their awesome burgers. Consider this a high recommendation because they are reliably delicious.

Headline of the Day

Ya know, I’m not the most scholarly Christian but I don’t remember being taught this at anytime. I thought it was just zebras and giraffes and stuff like that.

New museum says dinosaurs were on Noah’s Ark

Now, wouldn’t Rex have had a lot to eat those 40 days? Or maybe he did and those critters all got extincted.

You should already be out there

But if not, another way to get your Memorial groove on this weekend is with Country Thunder in Waxahachie/Ennis. Despite a cancelled show Friday from the storms, the superstar country music and camping event (yes I said camping) continues until Monday. Lorrie Morgan, Reba McEntire, Charlie Daniel, George Strait…dang…I think I would even go to that. Although my country music proclivities are leading me here.

Get stARTed on your collection

Looks like Kettle Art’s doing some Spring Cleaning and you’ve got till June 2 to take advantage. I’m just hoping when they say, “great deals on killer stuff”, it means not having to take out a small business loan for some original works. Nonetheless, check it out. You never know. Turf War

Well, it’s started. Deep Ellum has officially threatened West Village with Sol’s Taco Lounge leading the charge in today’s posting:

well hello folks. Don’t forget deep ellum needs your moneys. Come down this weekend and blow rent. Come on you know you’ll have fun. If you don’t then I’ll burn down the west village. See you if you guys like that.

Although, by the looks and punctuation of it, this declaration may be the result of a drunken stupor. Or some really hot salsa swallowing. Now what if it’s a West Villager blowing rent on Deep Ellum? Interesting paradox. Me…I’ll just stay on the sidelines in Expo Park or Oak Lawn.

Seeking pints of ice cream as I type

In regards to the following posting from today:

If we haven’t already had too much fun this month! Let’s cap it off with some more…im old today…28 to be exact…and to celebrate I’m going to do what I do best…see how many miller lites I can drink! hope to see everyone tonight!

Dear Myspace Master for Alexandre’s,

I’d like to mention that the fact you regard 28 as old does not bode well for those of us who are beyond that age. As my 35th birthday approaches in the summer, I look at your statement only to possibly wonder if I am at a dinosaur’s age and debating whether my party should now be at Luby’s instead of the Monkey Bar or Club Dada where I was originally thinking of. Besides, I dare not want to be considered a middle-aged wannabe hip old guy. I just didn’t think I had made it there just yet.

So thank you for my holiday weekend deflation as I will change all my plans from the Slip Inn and TMC to polka dancing at the Czech Club after I’ve clipped coupons for my Ensure cans.

By the way, happy birthday and I will passive-aggressively revel in the slight flaw that you didn’t capitalize or add the apostrophe here - im old today. Tongue out

Thank you,

Old blogger guy

Memorial Rainy Day Plans

I keep hearing mixed forecasts on the weather but personally, I think I’m sticking close to the indoors. But there is still lots to do around town. Take this for instance:

Yyyeah. I think I’d rather go to the Color Me Badd concert. Just keep in mind that one of the names of the band at Mr. Miguel’s event is Lame. Nuff said.
