One great weekend
I tried my damnedest to get an audio version of this on here but I can’t tell if it’s me or the site or what. So like any self respecting blogger, I gave up. But this weekend was pretty great, that I just have to share. In brief, of course.
Thursday night - The Killers were great at Nokia. Surprisingly too because stuff I had seen from them earlier seemed boring. The show rocked but Louis XIV was a snore to me. I file them under Auditorture. But might I recommend heading to The Club way upstairs for some nicely strong drinks and a view into the concert where we took in the opening opening act, Romance Fantasy, a pretty boy indie rock band that was average. Bad name though.
Friday night - Thought we’d try to blog Perez Hilton’s Hollywood Nights party for work but a no-go. I’m not a Perez Hilton fan nor do I read his blog but I was curious about what kind of turnout this would be over at the House of Blues. Not a bad one at that. He would sort of host a celebrity look alike contest onstage while DJ Mike D blasted tunes, then leave, then come back later. I’m like, “What?” We started in the Foundation Room upstairs, the swank private part of the club where we were kind of led to believe that’s where Perez would be. Nope. And while I was in search of a quote, apparently “his people” had him pretty well barricaded. His people? He’s a blogger. Stil, fun times followed up by Fuel City tacos at Lee Harvey’s.

Saturday night - All over the friggin’ place. A reception at the Rose Room for the chairs of the Pride Parade the next day. Nice gathering of peeps and was impressed by the funny dragapella band, The Kinsey Sicks. Clever stuff. Ed Oakley and Lupe Valdez were there and other prominent gay citizens. But I had to leave to check out Lucinda Williams at the Longhorn Ballroom. Ummm…amazing? The place was pretty packed and the concert booked by Mike Snyder (he owns this place) was simply perfect. There was some kind of great energy in the room with a receptive audience and a semi-intimate setting with Williams. She was solid, emotional, heartbreaking, and a rockin’ beyotch. She killed while she charmed.

An early show though got me out of there by 11:30 whereas I was able to catch She-Dick’s debut in Deep Ellum. Caught a little bit of it here. An aftershow 3 am breakfast at Cafe Brazil was the ideal albeit fattening end to a great night.
Sunday - Met up with Santo Gay at the Pride Parade and reveled in how perfect a day it was. Sunny, breezy, never too hot and a parade that didn’t linger like usual. It all culminated at Lee Park where the festival took place with live music and city reps and booths of food, information and retail and just tons of people enjoying it all. There was sort of that feeling that nothing was wrong in the world. At least just fer a bit. I left to have an early dinner at Lucky’s. There I had maybe the most perfect burger I’ve ever had (at least in a while) and took some dessert home. A fat slice of strawberry cake! Love the waitress for that.
But with all that, the best part for me? Even though I missed most of it, that final quarter of the Cowboys/Dolphins game was all I needed to watch. And it was a beautiful thing to smear Miami all over their own field.
A great weekend indeed.
