Oh Good Heavens

You got two days left for Martice Enterprises‘ production of the comedy, Heaven Forbids, this weekend and if it’s anything like their Latinologues show, it will be hilarious. Don’t be put off by the “Latin theater” experience. It ain’t all in Spanish and it ain’t gonna be one big inside joke. Writer Marco Rodriguez is brilliant and you’ll just laugh yer a$$ off throughout. Good times. Go see it. Right now.

Deep Ellum Mural Series Competition

The Deep Ellum Association is sponsoring re •cov •er, a mural competition to enhance the Deep Ellum Neighborhood. The proposed series of murals will be painted on buildings located on Elm, Main and Commerce Street and pay tribute to the area’s many musical artists.

Musicians under consideration for the first phase of the mural series include: Edie Brickell, Reverend Horton Heat, Tim Delaughter, Bobby Soxx, Don ‘Pepe Lopez’ Foote, Peter Schmidt, the Old 97’s, Mark ‘MC 900 Foot Jesus’ Griffin. Norah Jones, Earl Harvin, Dimebag / Pantera, Todd Lewis / The Toadies, Patrice Pike, Jim Suhler, Dave Williams / Drowning Pool, Sarah Hickman, Michelle Shocked, Roy Hargrove, Cottonmouth TX., and Blues legends Leadbelly, John Lee Hooker, Bessie Smith, Sam Myers and Robert Johnson.

re •cov •er v. 1. to take back again into one’s hands or possession 2. to regain possession of something lost or taken away 3. to regain by conquest or main force 4. to win back ground lost in fighting 5. to regain some non-material thing which may be spoken of as lost or taken away 6. to find again 7. to come upon a second time 8. to reclaim. Theme: Re-cover speaks both to the recent history of the tunnel and how artists might be approached in the design submissions.

Deep Ellum has always prided itself on being an artist community and a collaborative environment. In reclaiming it’s artistic roots, there must exist a strong sense of community and a respect for private property and original works of art. Community leaders and neighborhood activists developed the idea for the mural series competition to assist in attracting artists from the surrounding metro-plex area and engage them in the Deep Ellum community. This competition seeks to regain possession of original works of art which have physically been removed and to recognize the artistic contribution of artists whose original art we have lost in the process of the destruction of tunnel.

The competition is open to all Texas artists.
Cost: There is a $20.00 entry fee. The costs for mural execution will be sponsored by the Deep Ellum Association,The Deep Ellum Foundation, property owners and private donations.

Submissions should not exceed 24” x 36”. Names of designers and contact information should be in a sealed envelope attached to the back of the board. The mural series project has few other restrictions. The design has no material limit, however it must not project more than one inch from the wall.

Judging: The Deep Ellum community along with a panel of judges will select the winners.
The judges will be given latitude in the awarding of additional honors.
Top Prize: $1,000 and of course, having your work on permanent display for a year.
Commission: Upon selection, winning artists will work with a team to execute the design.

Submissions should be sent to:
Frank Campagna

My bloghorrhea’s actin’ up

There are a couple of blogs around town that might be of some interest. Check ‘em out.

I’m totally in love with The Soda Gallery in Oak Cliff. Retro stuff and sweet drinks cannot be a better combination. Not to mention being in the snazzy Bishop Arts District. Now they’ve announced their own blog even though it’s been up for a small while. Go read it now and catch up on the latest tastings and flavors hitting the gallery.

I jumped the gun on the next blog thinking it was more local since it came from the Dallas Angelika Theater but their new blog is more company wide than anything talking about all their theaters, especially (surprise) New York. So, if you just want the latest in general about the upcoming movies and festivals at the Angelika, you can be in the know here.

Blogtastic!

OK, first o’ all

GRiD is still around but obviously a little less lately. Working a temp gig that ends next week so foresee daily postings again after next week. Thanks for your patience even though my blog hits are fairly zero…unless blog.com’s stats are mistaken (which personally I think they are).

Second of all, I gots a birthday par-tay next Friday. And all eight of my readers are invited. Heh. Now, the event ain’t an actual Observer event but was in it’s first incarnation. Disclaimer y’all! The original date changed, the event petered out but SushiSamba offered simply a night and place for my candles and cake. And logo master at the office said keep the name on there. Free advertising…we’ll take it. Hope you can come.

Now what you’ll be doing tomorrow is helping out a Mister Colby Turner at Fat Joe’s (believe the website) in Irving. Check the flyers out below and venture out to iTown for a bumpin’ day and night with food, kid-friendly stuff and sweet slammin’ music by the Clever Monkeys, G.O.A.T., DJ Matt P and lots more all startin’ at noon. In fact, just read this:

Come support our good friend Colby Turner at a FREE benefit concert tomorrow. There will be food, drinks, a moon bounce for the kids ( or the drunk), and lots of free performances. This is to support our fellow DJ, Colby Turner who has been in a coma for 9 weeks now.

So there you have it.

So outta the loop

Or just getting old enough to be completely unhip but I’m not too sure what the MTV-U channel is. I have an idea it’s just college music stuff but otherwise, I have no idea how long it’s been around or what. Just nice to see, if I’m correct of course, MTV actually get back into the music biz. Not that I really care one way or another. Never really watched it much in the first place.

But anyway, I just got this notice from The Hourly Radio about their Deaf Ears video:

Hey everyone!

The music video for “Deaf Ears” is now playing on MTV-U and we need your help to make sure it stays in rotation.

You can help keep it in rotation by clicking here and voting. Voting last all this week and you can vote as many times as you’d like.

I just checked it out and voted myself but as of right now, they are ranked 4th. D’oh. So check it out, vote if you like and help make these Texas boys international rock stars. But you can watch it here first if you like.

Dirk-ish Delight

This vid was sent to me showing our one and only Dirk Nowitzki back home in Germany training with his national team for the World Championships. The only thing is, it’s in German. So other than “Dirk”, “MVP” and “Mavericks”, I can’t make out the rest. No matter. He still looks in top shape and I must admit, DAYUM he looks GOOD. I didn’t dig the indie rock hair he had at the beginning of last season but when he clipped it all down, I took a lot more notice. Now he’s inbetween and he look so damn sexy along with his scruffy beard. But if it gets too much longer, well then, I’ll have to bail the Hottie Dirk train…until his next cut.

Me no likey.

Me likey.

Dinner is the Bomb tonight

Not really sure who’s idea it was to put cabaret dancers while dining out because even just saying it makes me awkward. That’s just me. Expo Park Cafe is having the Lollie Bombs in tonight to serve some legs and breasts with that chicken and waffles you might be ordering. Here’s the deal:

What’s more fun than several talented scantily clad lovely young ladies shaking their stuff for your pleasure? Nothing! (ED NOTE: I can think of a few things)The Lollibombs @ Expo Park cafe tonight at 8:00. Cheap drinks and Karaoke too, Woo Hoo!!!

Here’s hoping the food inspector isn’t gonna make a surprise visit. Bon Apetit!

Get Your Pop Rocks Off

So what’s the latest buzz in local shopping excursions? I don’t know for sure but after Merritt turned me onto Pop Logic, I’m banking on this new retro shop in Lower Greenville. They are the latest in cool kitsch but for the longtime East Dallas denizen or at least those in the local-know it’s nothing new. Here’s their mini myspace bio:

We are POP LOGIC and are located @ 1929 Greenville Ave. in Dallas, Texas. You may have visited us at our previous location in Lakewood ~ Metro Retro. People ask why we changed our name …. we grew tired of the over-use of the words vintage and retro. Enough said? Although the name has changed we still have the same great stuff in addition to lots more! Come see our new & recycled clothing, mod furniture, collectibles, gift items, movies, music & more. We are carrying some great new pop culture items … too many to mention with new stock coming in weekly. For years we were known to have the best white elephant gifts and stocking stuffers in town … a tradition we will proudly carry on! We won Dallas Observer Best of: 2002 ~ Best place to get that TV Land Look 2002 ~ Best Impression of Grannys Attic 2003 ~ Best place to succumb to the kitsch 2004 ~ Best Retro Candy. Come check out our new location … you won’t be disappointed!!! Our summer hours are Thurs ~ Sat 12-7 and Sun 1-5. Extended hours coming soon! Questions or directions… 214/887-6888 DON’T Forget—we will be THE place to come for your vintage aluminum Christmas tree!

Kudos to them for bringing the fun stuff a little closer in. With the now troika of Dolly Python-House of Dang!-Pop Logic, I should never be short on the fabulosity. Where else can I buy this stuff…and not waste gas? This I ask.

Don’t go buy those chairs and cabinet. I may want them.

You know you want these.

Cool. In a serial killer kinda way.

By the way, the really want new friends. So jump on the bandwagon and add ‘em to yer myspace. Do it!
