H4PJ discusses Tom Leppert

our values are simple.
the journey is not.

Dear Friend,

Last week, the Heritage Alliance PAC, a right-wing, anti-gay organization, sent out “robocalls” to Dallas residents claiming that the top three issues in the Dallas Mayoral election are crime, education and homosexuality. They encouraged everyone to vote for Tom Leppert because he’s Christian and Ed Oakley is openly gay. Listen to the message here.

While the Leppert campaign denies any involvement, another right-wing, anti-gay organization, the Texas Eagle Forum, has sent a mass email titled, “Dallas Voters: PLEASE vote FOR Tom Leppert for Mayor!” From the Dallas Morning News Blog.

The body of the (Texas Eagle Forum) e-mail contains a Houston Chronicle article about the Dallas mayor’s race, and all of its references to mayoral candidate Ed Oakley being gay are highlighted in red.

This isn’t particularly shocking, or unexpected. The Eagle Forum’s self-stated mission includes enabling “conservative and pro-family men and women to participate in the process of self-government and public policymaking.” And the similarly socially conservative Heritage Alliance PAC, for example, this weekend engulfed Dallas with recorded phone calls urging residents to vote for Mr. Leppert in part because Mr. Oakley would become the nation’s first openly gay large city mayor if elected.

What’s interesting, however, is that Mr. Leppert earlier this year mailed out tens of thousands of campaign advertisements featuring a large picture of him talking with a well-dressed, white-haired woman. That woman was LaNeil Wright Spivy, a longtime leader of the Texas and Dallas Eagle Forum.

The latest Dallas Morning News/WFAA poll shows the race at a virtual tie.

H4PJ cannot endorse candidates, but we stand firmly against anti-gay rhetoric to win votes. It is time for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community and their friends to stand up and vote against gay bashing. This election is not about the candidate’s sexual orientation.

The June 16 election managers predict that only 35,000 to 40,000 voters will come to the polls. There are more than 120,000 LGBT residents in Dallas.

Getcher Art here

Oh man, I totally forgot about this. And according to Frank at Kettle Art, it sounds like things are going purty good. And this is before things got officially started. Check it out:

Update: Last night’s party was cool. Before the deal even officially opened today at noon we sold three Havi Frost, two Sergoi Garcias and one Mark Nelson. Needless to say we were thrilled. Today the actual art fair began about an hour ago. Two of Marie Sena’s pieces have already moved. Fan-freakin’-tastic eh? Anyway that’s about it for now… All is good as always.
Frank

Make your way over there stat and get that art for them naked walls. You hear me?

Kettle Art is some kind of amazing in the Deep Ellum community but I think Dicky van Tastic says it best with this blog comment from last month:

Kettle Art you are a judo chop to the face of conformity and a karate kick to the crotch of apathy. Thank you for that.

Preach.

Rock this Country

For your Thursday night considerations notwithstanding the cost of gas, might I suggest Rockin’ Rodeo? Yeeehawww. That is if you can’t get your country/cotton-eye-joe self rounded up anywhere around these parts. Rodeo has some good stuff even if it is all the way out in Denton.

June is National Adopt-a-Shelter-Cat Month

I did not know that. The SPCA of Texas is celebrating  by offering a $50 adoption special for any cat six months or older at its Dallas and Collin County shelters and all offsite adoption venues. Just make your way over to either one or go here to find out where the offsite spots will be in the near future.

It’s a good deal for adding that fuzzy feline to your family. The $50 fee covers spay/neuter surgery, all age-appropriate shots, rabies shot, a microchip (A quick, non-surgical process which involves injecting a tiny, sterile microchip containing an unalterable ID code between a pet’s shoulder blades, enabling animal shelters to locate owners of lost pets), de-worming, a feline leukemia test for all cats over four months and a temporary carrier. Such the bargain. And you’ll be saving about $30 from the regular fees.

“A special month to focus on adopting a shelter cat is important, even though every month should be an adopt-a-cat month,” says James Bias, President of the SPCA of Texas. “We also want to remind the public how quickly cats can multiply, which is one reason why it’s so important to spay and neuter.”

The SPCA’s shelters are open from noon - 6 p.m. seven days a week. The SPCA’s three low cost spay/neuter clinics perform the surgeries by appointment. Call 214-742-SPCA(7722) for more information or to make an appointment.
