Just how bad is it over there?
I just read that DISD passed a new policy last week that will require mesh and clear backpacks only in the upcoming academic year. Apparently this will expedite screening as kids enter the campus. The “Keep it Clear” campaign explained that:
Starting in the fall, all backpacks and book bags must be clear plastic or mesh. Students who choose to carry a backpack or a book bag must ensure they are clear plastic or mesh. The use of these bags and packs will help speed up the process of entering the school each morning and help keep all Dallas ISD schools safe and secure.
If kids can’t afford one then DISD will give them one but hey, who pays for those? Me? Considering the program is an estimated $1 - $2 million annual cost, then yes, I suspect taxpayers may be brought into the fold for these dang bags.
There are definitely pros and cons to this but it just seems a lightweight measure against the heavier problems of cheese and guns and what not. Sure it’s gonna speed things up, great. Sure students might be less inclined to bring their drugs or knives or whatever we suspect them of doing, but if they want to bring it, they will. No stopping that. What’s more, these clear and mesh bags are usually cheap in the sense of quality. I know personally they break and rip a little easier. So does the student who gets a free one, get another after his/hers has been damaged? Because if the school or taxpayers rather are buying them, trust me, they are going for the cheapest bid out there.
