Somewhat Different Plans for Tonight

That is if you’re not watching the Mavs as I will be. Check out Murray St. Coffee Shop in Deep Ellum. Quite possibly the best coffee shop in town. Hadn’t been there in a while but last night was just like old times. Their Wednesday nights are a little more happening though, what with a DJ and all. DJ Zoe spins the grooves as opposed to the jams and not only that, they’ll be having happy hour on their beer and wine. Not just your average coffee shop.

Standing Ovation - Austin Croshere

Welcome to the newest segment of GRiD. The Standing Ovation where we simply can’t give anything less to the honoree. And without a doubt, it’s going to this man, whom you may just see later in the week in my blog. Wink.

A career high of 34 points in a game and simply the man last night against the Supersonics. Congratulations, Austin Croshere.

G.R.i.D. Giveaway

Welcome to GRiD’s first giveaway. I’m just hoping it goes over better than my garage sale. Fair warning, day two is coming up on that.

I have two tix for this week’s Powerpop show at the Granada. Well, that’s how they described it on their myspace page. And so you may ask what is the show? Oh, just the following:

Black Tie Dynasty (who I can’t get enough of)

The Crash That Took Me (including members of DARYL, BTD and The Earlies)

Faux Fox

Smile Smile.

Some great stuff in there. Trust me. You want tickets? Sure thing. Only if you write me a blog entry with some weird Dallas tidbit or news or music item or whatever. Just send ‘em to grid_blog@yahoo.com I may even have some more tix to give away later.

Or will this attempt to reach out go down in flames like my sale? Sigh.

Mark your Calendars

Geez….has anyone looked at the upcoming shows ellum:ONSTAGE has? They are kicking butt and fast. And as much as I liked the Palladium Ballroom, EO’s shows are looking like a much better offering.

I’m just sayin’.

See you at Mates of State.

I don’t know who’s playing here but this is ellum’s state-of-the-art stage to its 1100 person venue.

Tuesday Night Meat

If you’re out and about tonight, don’t forget your taste of Meat Radio tonight over at Club Dada. Nothing against Dada but just wish some other clubs were doing great stuff all the time. Maybe soon, all the other places will catch on. Lakewood Bar and Grill is getting the idea thanks to that dynamo, Amanda.

There she is…

Well, I can’t say I really care about pageants but Quick felt the need to remind that tonight is Miss America. Now, this isn’t the one that Donald Trump sponsors. I think this is the real thing that ‘every girl dreams of’. And then they forget and go for Miss USA.

Anyway, I guess we should wish Miss Texas 2006, Shilah Phillips good luck tonight. And if you’re curious about our representative, here are some facts to quench your thirst:

Age: 24

Family: Her mother, Janie Nicol, runs a day care center and is an interior decorator. Her stepfather, Jonathan Nicol, is a civil engineer. Her sister, 23, just graduated from college as a dance major. Her brother, 26, is a Navy Seal medic.

Talent: Singing

In the fall: She will enroll in the University of North Texas jazz program.

Her story: She’s the first black Miss Texas. She dropped out of college at 19 to pursue a singing career in Los Angeles for two years. She tried out for American Idol. When her singing career did not take off, she moved to Texas to be closer to her mother and stepfather in Plano and enrolled in Collin County Community College. She is also Miss Frisco.

Dream: To perform and sing all over the world, to be in film and television

Likes: Salsa and swing dancing, television show 24

Dang. Lots going on tonight.

You can get your art fix early by checking this out:

And be sure and check out the work on the links at the bottom of the flyer. Wow. But if it’s hard to read, click to go to their site for info.

I just heard Waking Ashland on cd half an hour ago. Some OK stuff but they’ll be here;

and then there’s this house party that sounds old school;

and I gotta mention these chicks cause they’ve always been pretty awesome to me;

but I must admit, I hope I make it to this show. I think I need my Troubadour fix from Millicent.

Yer Saturday Deep Ellum Outing

Why can’t I get notice of these things ahead of time? Had no idea about this but sounds like lotsa fun and some good deals. Me? I’ll be at the Gap actually spending a gift card and then off to Garden Ridge for a hamper. Exciting. You should do better here:

The Vintage Factory is a direct extension of Counter Culture’s design warehouse, opening up over 10,000 square feet of our international vintage distribution business to the Dallas public. The Vintage Factory will not only be the best place to find
inexpensive vintage, but a destination for a day out in Deep Ellum. We are doing what we can to inject creative culture back into our society and to rebuild the Deep Ellum community to what it once was by offering live music, art shows, multicultural events, and even a mini sk8 park.

Come check us out THIS SATURDAY at 2701 Main St. just 2 doors down from our first location. Fashion through culture is our continuous focus as we continue to offer our patrons a whole new shopping experience. For those of you who have always supported us and for our neighbors in Deep Ellum we will be hooking you up with killer deals in the weeks to come.
