Monday Night in front of the TV

I’ll be watching this. Especially since yesterday’s game left such a bad taste in my mouth. No NFL for me tonight. You watch too!

GLAAD: Fair, Accurate and Inclusive Representation

For more information on
Wedding Wars, click here.

Friends,

This Monday, A&E will air the original movie Wedding Wars, which offers a fresh, entertaining take on marriage equality — and how people are growing to realize that banning their gay family members, friends and acquaintances from marrying is both unfair and hurtful to everyone.

This is the kind of storytelling that can invest more and more people in our lives and our families, and we’re thrilled that millions of A&E viewers will soon be able to see this movie and share it with their friends and loved ones.

Also, during the world premiere, A&E will air GLAAD’s award-winning PSA featuring Julianne Moore. To check it out, click here.

Absinthe Minded

I’ve always wanted to try the drink absinthe. I guess cause it has such a taboo about it. And the forgettable but decent Johnny Depp movie From Hell made it look oh so sexy and appealing. I would have a chance according to the following, but I’m just too cheap:

WHAT: Four-Course Absinthe Dinner- Absinthe, the distilled, highly alcoholic, anise-flavored spirit derived from herbs and often called the Green Fairy will be paired with Executive Chef Tony Gardizi’s seasonal global menu.

WHEN: Friday    December 22, 2006  7 p.m.
WHERE: Veuve     5100 Beltline Road, Suite 410
                            972.788.1928

COST:                    $100.00 per person

MENU:

1. Pan Seared Hudson Valley Foi Gros

with poached granny smith apples and blueberry compot

Served with Martini Avec Moi

2. Green Tea Smoked Heirloom Tomatoes

in Tazze de Parmesan

Served with the Green Fairy

3. Intermission with the Absinthe Energizer

4. Ancho Braised Wild Boar Shank

 Maybe next time.

Rock the Troops

Seems like local label Small Guy Music is working to make it easier for the troops overseas with Operation Rock the Troops. They’ve created a massive 39 track compilation cd of Texas music with servicemen in mind. How so? Well, for every cd purchased, they send along a cd as well to our men overseas “to help take them away from their reality for a moment to remember a little bit of home.” Their goal is 100,000 cds to send on over. You can even personalize their cd with a message. Awesome.

Curious about who’s on the cd? Just these guys:

FEATURED ARTISTS ON THE OPERATION ROCK THE TROOPS CD COMPILATION: VOLUME ONE: Jason Lucas • Deep Blue Something • South FM • Josh Goode Band • Gary Kyle • Rhythm • Eleven Hundred Springs • One Up • Reflection Theory • The Mermaid Purse • JFJ • Frolic • boynamedcircus • Paul Renna • Missy • Sean Russell • Benzley • Strangleweed • Quincy Harper

VOLUME TWO: Edgewater • Fair To Midland • Glass Intrepid • Neverset • Supercell • Insight • Spiracell • Early Pearl • Matthew JC • Core Factor • Hollow • DownLo • Seven Story Drop • Electric Crush • Ember • Rustik • 57 State • Paperface • Structure • JT Longoria featuring Mario Cadena

CD SAMPLER: Vapor • Moving Atlas • Halto Bravo • Taylor McKenna • Egress • Dine Alone • Cord • Tommy Irvin

For more information, go here and start ordering up yer cds for you and yer friends for the holidays. And give Small Guy a standing ovation.

And thanks to…

Josh from Blackheart Society. He was helping out at the door at Dada on Thursday night and we began chatting. The nicest guy and he said what every ego-centric writer in the blogosphere wants to hear:

“I read your blog.”

Instantly, I was humbled. Thanks, Josh!

Everyone else, go to their site now and check out their music. Some good stuff that way.

Dear Apocalypto Viewers,

To all those who went out to make this movie #1, I just want to say thank you for supporting a full fledged homophobe and anti-semite. And a drunk. Can you wait for Michael Richards next movie?

Maybe it’s just me being too harsh but his personal and hateful views override his artistic credibility and thus I do not wish to see any more Mel Gibson movies.

Rich

PS. I got a few Mel dvd’s for sale cheap. $3 each. Braveheart; Conspiracy Theory; Pocahontas (not Special Edition). No, really.

Weekend Music Tidbit

Just doing a quick review of the music I saw since last Thursday. I ain’t no Jonanna or Sam so it won’t be all musically intellectual but whatever.

This past Thursday at Dada, Boca Tinta’s Birthday Bash was just that. A good lineup, great crowd, a free drink and yummy cupcakes all made for a blast on Amanda’s birthday. As well as raising $300 for Bryan’s House. Bravo!

I forget the name of the singer/songwriter dude playing when we came in but he wasn’t doing it for me at all. A little bit of a yawn. I waited anxiously for Shibboleth. I had heard them once before at Zac Crain’s mayoral run announcement and can’t say they made much of an impression on me. After Thursday night, I don’t see how that happened. They are phenomenal and lots of fun too. They are surf rock instrumental (?) and remind me of chase scenes in Austin Powers movies interspersed with erratic dance numbers. As they rocked the place, people just watched. What is it with Dallas crowds? Bands probably want you to dance or groove as opposed to sitting there with your cig and drink watching intensely as if through osmosis you are a better hipper person for watching a band. Get over it everybody! Let loose! Trust me, it’s as pretensious as you probably think the frat boys are over at the Barley House (which I’m about to get to).

After Shib came I Heart Trouble. Amanda thinks no chick under 35 can rock but made the exception for Anna Proctor and her band. And she’s right. Well, about the rockin’ part. Totally dug them and the fact that Ms. Proctor was on stage with a black dress and a string of pearls. Fabulous!

Astronautalis finished off the show and I’ve always been fascinated by this guy. I can’t say I’m a fan but I like his choices in his beats. Borderline Tourrette’s, Astro jerks and twitches and squirms with abandon getting his songs out but somehow he commands attention. And his freestyling skillz are off da hook. Can I say that? Dissing Alliyah for the Wii was hilarious as well as clever.

Good show, Boca.

Jump to Saturday night, I made my way to the Barley House to see Handclaps and Harmonies and I Love Math. HnH in their white pants and ties and baby blue shirts tore it up with their infectious tunes. But with the B House being as frat-tastic as it is, pretty much the SMU crowd just watched. Sitting at tables or talking at the bar not opening themselves up to some pretty good talent right in front of their faces. Yet, Monday morn they’ll talk about the cool band they saw in order to maintain street cred. Two chicks, my friend Beth and I stood watching the band partaking in our own groove thang and following along with the handclaps the band motioned for us to join.

And then I Love Math comes on. After a pumped up set from HnH, I was ready for more, only for this band to all take a seat and try to jam from their asses. A four piece rock outfit that lost me the second they started. First, they didn’t announce themselves, they just started. Second, they were sitting down. Third, their music was fairly generic. They had a following with fans standing as close to the stage as possible. But they were at least enjoying it as opposed to the rest of the boring crowd in their button ups layered under their navy blue sweaters. I loved the blonde chick that decided she couldn’t go one night w/o being hot so she had to wear her halter top….in 30 degree weather. The no-brainer joke is an easy one here.

So a good weekend with fairly good music. Thank you Amanda for introducing me to I Heart Trouble and thank you HnH for making it an early evening…or I guess that would have been I Love Math.

Get off yer lazy a$$e$!!

Seven Day G-Man 12-10

OK, there’s not a lot to say here after my outing on Wednesday night to the movies, but I’ll give you the runners-up.

Monday’s potential hottie of the week (and probable future winner) was a slam dunk in the name of Good Morning America’s Features Correspondent, Mike Barz. Not only is he a major hottie, he’s got one of the best on camera personalities. He’s funny and a ham without being annoying (take note Gary Cogill) but it so doesn’t hurt that he’s easy on the eyes. It just wasn’t his week. And what I wouldn’t do to have his job.

Tuesday, Good Morning Texas had Todd Whitthorne on the show. He was actually a former host on GMT and now works over at the Cooper Aerobics Center as president and chief operating officer of Cooper Conceptsand also serves as the host and executive producer of “Healthy Living Radio with Dr. Ken Cooper.” I put him on here because he’s a great looking guy but he came to speak to my class once and he was just one of the most genuine and nicest and professional guys I’ve ever met. And very willing to offer advice for the budding journalist. Seeing him on reminded me of all that. So I had to throw him in here.

But Wednesday sealed the deal that the rest of the week didn’t matter. And there are only three words to say.

Bond. James Bond.

There’s a joke in there somewhere about this pic.
