First of the 2006 best of lists

Got word today that Gorilla V. Bear, one of the primo local music blogs, went ahead and posted his/their top album picks of the year. His tastes are much more indie than mine which can come off both as fairly unique and pretensious. But he knows his stuff and I haven’t heard half of what he listed. At the very least, it gives me an idea of what to keep an ear out for.

gorilla vs. bear’s Top 10 of 2006

13. J Dilla Donuts
12. Cansei De Ser Sexy CSS
11. Peter and the Wolf Lightness
10. Hot Chip The Warning
9. Grizzly Bear Yellow House
8. Beach House Beach House
7. Sunset Rubdown Shut Up I Am Dreaming
6. Ghostface Killah Fishscale
5. Love Is All Nine Times That Same Song
4. Clipse Hell Hath No Fury
3. Joanna Newsom Ys
2. Midlake The Trials of Van Occupanther
1. The Knife Silent Shout

*******************************

I’ve got way more lists where this one came from. The much more interesting “Favorite Songs of 2006” list is coming soon…like, tomorrow maybe. Click the read more link to check out Garrison’s and Michelle’s lists, and to download a bunch of free and legal mp3s from our favorite records of the year…

Although, I’m not sure why he posted 13 when he says top ten. Ahh well, more to check out. Go to the rest of his picks and the blog itself here.

In the meantime, I blatantly stole WeeDemon’s idea from last year and created G.R.i.D.’s first mixtape of the year in review. Just 14 songs that I totally dug for whatever reason. If ya want a copy, feel free to ask and I’ll burn ya one. But lemme tell ya. My tastes are fairly simple and lean toward the obvious. But hey, it’s all subjective anyways. Right?

G.R.i.D R.I.P? Nahh…hope not

The American Journalism Review posted Blogging Between the Lines about the art of blogging and the potential and/or possible conflict between a newspaper and its employee’s personal blogs. Eeps! It throws the Dallas Morning News’ name all over the place along with top ten tips for a good blog. I’ll post those below in case you don’t finish.

Dallas Morning News Editorial Page Editor Keven Ann Willey led her staff in launching the nation’s first editorial page blog. Here are her suggestions:

1. Be brief and informal. Breezy, conversational tone is good. Two hundred words is too long. Go for the quick hit, light touch, witty aside. Attitude required.

2. Don’t be too proud to blog.

3. Respond to previous blog postings. This is about conversation, after all. It’s the back and forth that makes a blog engaging.

4. Vary your topics. Don’t be a wonk.

5. Don’t write anything you wouldn’t want your mother to read in the paper.

6. Use hyperlinks.

7. Incorporate interesting, provocative reader e-mail. The best blogs are two-way streets.

8. Be quick to correct yourself.

9. Don’t feel obligated to answer all blog-generated e-mail.

10. Don’t over edit; but designate a blog boss.

Young Conservatives of TX parody the Nativity

I grabbed this from DallasBlog.com

The Young Conservatives of Texas are planning to erect a “parody” of the Nativity Scene at the University of Texas in Austin to protest the “extremity” of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU).  According to a spokesman for the YCT “We’ve got Gary and Joseph instead of Mary and Joseph in order to symbolize ACLU support for homosexual marriage, and of course there isn’t a Jesus in the manger,” said Chairman Tony McDonald. “The three Wise Men are Lenin, Marx, and Stalin because the founders of the ACLU were strident supporters of Soviet style Communism. The whole scene is a tongue-in-cheek way of showing the many ways that the ACLU and the far left are out of touch with the values of mainstream America.”  The scene will also display a terrorist shepherd and an angel in the form of Nancy Pelosi.  So how many conservative Christian Texans will find this humorous or even get the point?

Haven’t made up my mind on this yet but there’s a bit more here.
