Now that’s a headline…Thank you, Mexico

Mexico City approves gay civil unions

By E. EDUARDO CASTILLO, Associated Press WriterThu Nov 9, 6:04 PM ET

Mexico City’s assembly on Thursday voted for the first time in the country’s history to legally recognize gay civil unions, a measure that will provide same-sex couples with benefits similar to those of married couples. The mayor was expected to sign the measure into law.

The bill, which does not approve gay marriage, allows same-sex couples to register their union with civil authorities, granting them inheritance and pension rights, as well as other social benefits. Lawmakers were still finalizing the details.

Heterosexual couples who are not legally married can also be registered under the legislation.

The bill was severely criticized by the Catholic Church and conservative civil groups. It passed by a vote of 43-17, with all the opposition coming from the National Action Party of President Vicente Fox and president-elect Felipe Calderon.

The party is known for its opposition to abortion and its support for traditional families.

Mexico City is a federal district with its own legislature, and the law will apply only to residents of the capital, with a population of 8.7 million. This is the first time any state legislature has approved such a law anywhere in Mexico.

Eating Out - Tres Meridas in Frisco

Frisco is a long ways away. Yuk! Why anyone would want to live out there in that boring cookie cutter town is beyond me as well as way beyond city limits. I bet all those apparent good deals on homes aren’t worth the gallons of gas to their downtown offices! But the good thing was I could try a restaurant! I didn’t have my trusty list handy but I happened to see Tres Meridas. Yes!

It calls itself a Latin restaurant and I’d best compare it to Gloria’s. The restaurant was nice with great decor but I just wasn’t sure why it didn’t appeal to me. I was VERY tired and lethargic and maybe that was it but as nice as it was, I just didn’t feel comfortable.

I ordered the Pabellon Criollo (pictured below) described as an ‘authentic Venezuelan dish which consists of a tower of rice pilaf, pulled beef topped with sweet plantains surrounded by black bean salsa and queso fresco’. It was very good and even better as nachos. While the chips were bland and almost cold, they were much better topped by my meal. Their utensils were unusual and hard to keep a hold of. It was very disconcerting!

Long story short, food good, place, nice but not for me.
