My own radio station!

Sort of. Thank you Miss Jodi for telling me about this. Knowing me, it’s probably been around forever and I’m just now grabbing onto it, but it’s the best. If not the only. Enjoy!

And while you listen to YOUR radio station, go get all artsy-Jackson-Pollock-like on yourself here.

Too lazy to be descriptive

But ya gotta check out The Amsterdam’s Bad Ass Jazz Night on Mondays. Although scheduled for 9:30, the kats didn’t start playing till 11 but it was worth the wait. The jam was slammin’ and better than that Balcony Club stuff. The Stellas weren’t bad either.

And finish off your Monday night just around the corner at the Meridian. A laid back crowd and decent Doppel Bock (5.50) that got my expert drinker bud even a little happy.

Do it!

Polling for Dallas’ new mayor

Got this bulletin from mayoral candidate Zac Crain today on myspace

Please forgive the second bulletin, we know how these things can get to be a nuisance.

However, we’d like to share what Tim Rogers, the Executive editor of D Magazine has to say:

RE: MAYORAL POLL

Wow. If there was any question which of the candidates is more wired, we now know the answer. My guess is that Darrell Jordan, unlike Zac Crain, doesn’t read FrontBurner. I’m also guessing that Jordon doesn’t have a MySpace page and isn’t planning to raise money with a CD compilation of local musicians. If our good buddy Zac makes an impact in this election, it’ll be because he figured out how to use the Internet unlike any Dallas mayoral candidate before him.

Please help us continue sending our message:

Vote for Zac now in the D Magazine Poll

By the way, I should have done this a while ago, but better late than never I guess. I’d like to welcome Zac Crain’s blog to the Hot Blog stand. A thought provoking perspective on the Big D.

Step in the right direction - thank you, New Jersey

From Yahoo News

NJ court stops short of gay marriage OK

New Jersey’s highest court ruled Wednesday that gay couples are entitled to the same rights as heterosexuals, but that lawmakers must determine whether the state will honor gay marriage or some other form of civil union.

Advocates on both sides of the issue believed New Jersey posed the best chance to become only the second after Massachusetts to legalize gay marriage because its high court has a history of extending civil rights protections.

Instead, the Supreme Court stopped short of fully approving gay marriage and gave lawmakers 180 days to rewrite marriage laws to either include gay couples or create new civil unions.

“The issue is not about the transformation of the traditional definition of marriage, but about the unequal dispensation of benefits and privileges to one of two similarly situated classes of people,” the court said in its 4-3 ruling.

New Jersey lawmakers voted to allow domestic partnerships in 2004, but they have been reluctant to delve into the sensitive issue of marriage.

Under domestic partnerships, gay couples have some benefits of marriage, such as the right to inherit possessions if there is no will and healthcare coverage for state workers.

Exposition Park tonight

Looks like we are definitely headed here for some apparent “Bad A$$ Jazz”. And since we’ll be in the neighborhood, we may just stop at a few more places.

My mornings have changed

I hadn’t eaten Alpha Bits for cereal since I was a kid years ago but I do remember how good it was. Whoever thought this was a good idea should be fired. After years of not having them, I thought I’d try them out only to pour it in the trash. No sugar? No way! YUK!

Fundamentally Random

Tonight was the Pet Shop Boys concert at Nokia. My friend Mark was given comp tickets and I was the lucky friend to go. Who could turn down third row tickets? Even if they turned out to be sixth row? Not I. Plus, I hadn’t been to a big concert in a long while. I had never been to Nokia so it was a double treat.

Scheduled for eight p.m, we waited half an hour looking at a large picture of a brain surrounded by a neon square. That, a chaise lounge and one keyboard adorned the stage. As innovative as PSB is, I was certain this couldn’t be the entire set. It was but deceptively so. As the lights went down, two men appeared but not the artists. Everyone clapping and yelling, another pair appeared and began dancing. Without any surprise, PSB merely walked onto the stage to perform Psychological of their latest album, Fundamental. Being more of a groove, the concert got off to a slow start.

The brain image was part of a bigger mobile unit that could be divided into three sections. So it could be one long screen or even hold the dancers during certain numbers. You had to be there. Oh wait, now you can be.

With song after song they didn’t stray too much into unknown territory which was great. But the show was so completely random. While the men did their thing (singing and keyboarding), the dancers (two of ‘em) had some really elementary moves. They were good dancers but the choreography was reminiscent of any high school recital. Some cool breakdancing mixed with ballet never struck a chord and their lack of sync really drove me nuts. Vocalist Neil Tennant had no rapport with them and just let them do their thing. The hunky backup singers and the black female diva with the huge headress did little to help me figure out the exact theme of the show. Had none of them been there, the show might have been better. Instead it was good because the songs and sounds were good but the huge lingering ‘huh’ weighed too heavy.

The techno music and a singer who doesn’t have to belt out each number really made for a good sound. I like when an artist can sound pretty close to their cd version. But at the same time, PSB never got too daring with their songs that could have been easily remixed or reworked. But they did not disappoint and played the majority of their hits. West End Girls, Rent, Always on my Mind and a pumping encore of It’s a Sin and Go West. The nearly full house was up and at ‘em at every dance number and somehow, what I thought might be a subdued concert of 80s reminiscers sitting and listening to old faves was instead a dance party with most everyone on their feet.

I was worn out. I had no idea what to expect and got just that. I would have loved to have seen my fave PSB songs live. But I’ll just watch it here.
