What am I missing here?

I can’t get my head wrapped around this story. In fact, I’m cutting and pasting the following from yesterday’s Dallas Morning News article. Don’t worrry. I’m not manipulating the facts, just cutting out the fat.

D’Angelo Lee, the embattled former Dallas city plan commissioner and a target of the FBI’s City Hall corruption investigation, was arrested early Sunday morning on public intoxication charges after claiming employees at an all-nude strip club stole thousands of dollars from him.

Lee, driving a black Land Rover, flagged down police at 3 a.m. Sunday outside Club Knubian Fantaciez, a dance club at Mockingbird Lane and Harry Hines Boulevard that police say turns into a venue featuring all-male strippers after midnight.

According to police reports, he told authorities that three men – one naked, one wearing only a towel – had attacked him and thrown him out of the club, breaking his glasses and stealing his crocodile-skin wallet in the process.

The wallet, he told police, was worth $15,000, a number he attributed Monday to high limits on his credit cards.

He said he was at the club to pick up women.

When police interviewed employees at the club, they admitted to throwing Mr. Lee out, saying he was causing a disturbance. They denied taking Mr. Lee’s wallet.

Lee indicated on Monday that the whole ordeal had been blown out of proportion.

“I thought someone had stolen my wallet, so I called the police,” he said.

So, my first thought was, ‘all nude male dancers?’ And then my second thought was ‘he’s going there to pick up women?’ My third thought then was ‘he sure is quick to make that clear!’ I’m just sayin’! And then all of the sudden the whole story changed from being a victim to making a mistake about someone stealing his wallet.

To top it off, what’s the deal with him getting a public intoxication charge. Um…let me requote here “Lee, driving a black Land Rover, flagged down police at 3 a.m. Sunday outside Club Knubian Fantaciez, a dance club at Mockingbird Lane and Harry Hines Boulevard” Hello? No DUI? This might be my way out should I ever be caught under the influence (knocking on wood that never happens).

I can’t even hypothesize on this the right way. Was it all a ruse? Do guys go to male strip bars to pick up women? And as a former city official, should he be held to a higher standard of his nightly outings? I say yes but that’s just me. Considering he’s also under FBI investigation and was acquitted of extortion charges in L.A., I guess his standard has already been lowered. Not much else can go wrong for this guy right now. But I can only imagine the video of him getting thrown out by three guys, one being naked and the other in a towel. Either he was a big time disturbance or those gents ain’t got no shame. I say both. And as usual, Jim Schutze always says it best.
